It was an absolute delight to watch the Men in Blue back in action. And they came back in style! A comprehensive victory in the end ensured that India leads the series 1-0 against Srilanka in the Micromax cup which commenced from today.
He may not have been in the best of forms in the IPL, but the moment Kohli donned the national colours, he hit his purple patch again! Virat Kohli now has 12 ODI centuries next to his name and the last four have come in his last five appearances for India! This is an insane stat!
After an unusually long break, India was slow to start off with with Virender Sehwag missing the ball more than once. Gambhir was a bit unlucky on drifting the ball onto the stumps which set India back. But once Sehwag got his eye in, I don’t think there is any need to explain what followed. The footwork or should I say, the lack of footwork, was still there but his hand-eye coordination remained impeccable. It’s become more like a trend these days with ultra explosive batsmen taking their time to get their eye, in knowing fully well that they can catch up later. Sehwag is one and Gayle seems to be the other guy worshipping this philosophy.
At the other end, Virat Kohli seemed his usual self picking the bowlers apart with his classy style and some new found maturity. The reason being that on reaching his century, he just smile around and waved his bat unlike earlier where he used to jump in aggression. Or maybe, scoring hundreds is becoming more like a day job for him. Even when Sehwag and Kohli fell quickly after one another, the ever dependable pair of Dhoni and Raina helped India reach a formidable total of 314. Even when Raina is short in confidence, he doesn’t mind taking the aerial route while Dhoni was as shrewd as ever and exhibited his infamous helicopter shot on more than one occasion.
The Srilankan chase began on a horrible note as they lost Dilshan in the very first over. It was upto Sangakkara to lead them from that point and all the remaining batsmen had to do was to play around him. Unfortunately, that did not happen while Sangakkara’s 14th ton went in vain but no credit can be taken from the quality of batting he displayed.
