Australian Open 2012

The first Grand Slam of the year 2012 is finally here. The Australian Open 2012 kicks off today as the giants gear up to live up to their expectations and the giant killers get ready to spoil their party.  The year 2011 pretty much was Novak Djokovic’s year. His ruthless 70-6 win-loss performance  and a 5-0 record against former world no. 1 Nadal earned him 3 slams and the prized title of World no. 1. If he manages to continue the run he had last year, it won’t be possible for anyone to stop him from getting his 3rd Australian Open. However, his biggest threat lies in the form of Federer who was the only man to beat him in a Grand Slam last year and of course the mighty Nadal whose never die attitude can be a big trouble. The draw of lots hasn’t been kind to Nadal this year. He and Federer are in the same half and if all goes well, Nadal will face giant killers like  Ivan Ljubicic, Feliciano Lopez, Nikolay Davydenko, David Nalbandian, John Isner, Nicolas Almagro, Stanislas Wawrinka, Kevin Anderson, Tomas Berdych and Tommy Haas. He might have to face Del Potro or Federer in the semi-finals if he manages to sail past all troubles.

We’ll still back Novak Djokovic to steal the show in the men’s department this year without ruling out the possibility of a giant killer like Fernando Verdasco or Might Joe Wilfried Tsonga setting up a date with him in the finals.

In the women’s section everything is a bit messed up. We haven’t seen dominance by any women player in 2011 and amazingly 4 Grand Slams last year produced 4 different champions.  Kim Clijsters, Li Na, Maria Sharapova, Serena Williams, Petra Kvitova and Samantha Stosur can steal the show. But you still cant bet you assets on any one of them. Its an anyone’s game in the womens section with absolutely no favorite this year.
The top seed Caroline Wozniacki who is yet to win a grand slam will have another chance to step out and shut the mouth of her critics who are amazed by the fact that Wozniacki was World No. 1 without winning a single Grand Slam.

  1. Like you, Pamela Murray is beginning to grow on me. Wow is he ever fast anurod the court! Some incredible gets by both guys today.I still am trying to keep an open mind about Nole, but it becomes wearing. I was also underwhelmed by Tsonga complaining that the ball boys didn’t get his towel to him fast enough, causing him extra walking. My new fave is Simon (he of the witty quips). Hope to like Cilic & del Potro as well. And, as always, I hope for a resurgence from Marcos Baghdatis, who has apparently dropped out of the top 100, and I continue to hope for great things from Ernests Gulbis. But, as always, Rafa is No 1 in my heart! Vamos!
