Gangs of Wasseypur
So after facing the torture of Teri Meri Kahaani we wanted a dose of some good appreciable cinema and Gangs of Wasseypur gave us exactly that. Ever since we first saw the trailer of Gangs of Wasseypur we expected it to be something good, something different as Anurag Kashyap has always given us. Be it Dev D, be it Shaitan, be it Udaan or be it Gulaal all of them have impressed us and as per us should have been blockbusters all the way even though only a couple of them were able to achieve it. Anurag Kashyap is undoubtedly one of the best Directors Bollywood has got at the moment and Manoj Bajpayee has been an able actors for years as far as serious movies are concerned.
We have come across several movies in the past that have been overhyped and in the end have done nothing but disappointed us. These movies have huge star cast different outdoor exotic shooting locations but what all of them lack is the creativity, a story and everything else that a movie should have. Movies by Anurag Kashyap has exactly what a movie needs- a story, good direction, excellent camera work, sense of narration that keeps the viewer interested at all times, no nonsense background music and hence everything to keep you hooked!
Gangs of Wasseypur, to put it simply is about revenge and we have seen plenty of them in Bollywood in the past BUT (and that’s a big but!) we haven’t come across any that can come close to beating Gangs of Wasseypur. The film is basically Sardar Khan’s (Manoj Bajpayee) quest for revenge against Ramadhir Singh (Tigmanshu Dhulia), a coal mine contractor in Dhanbad and also Sardar’s long standing inter-community rivalry with the Qureshi clan in Wasseypur. The reason for his motive is the killing of his father, the brave Shahid Khan, by Ramadhir. So as said, to put it simply, it’s all about revenge! The important part which we would like to mention is the fact that it is based on a true story!
Gangs of Wasseypur has the background narration by Piyush Mishra who tells the story right from the beginning of how the whole brawl, the whole revenge thing came about begin from pre-independence to whatever happens afterwards. The narration was something that kept us hooked in the beginning. Even though the story moves on from decade to another, the main characters especially Manoj Bajpayee isn’t shown to age much which is something that can be put as a negative and with that we are done with the negative of the movie! (Yes, we too are surprised that all we got was just a single negative!)
Now let us begin with the pros or the praises that we can make of Gangs of Wasseypur and before we do, let us inform you, we weren’t paid by anyone for all the positives that you are going to read over here! Gangs of Wasseypur begins on a confusing note and is one of those movies (unlike most Bollywood movies) that actually requires you to use your brain to understand what’s really going on in the movie. Considering it to be a gangster movie there has to be a lot of action and we got enough of it in the rawest of forms possible. Violence is pretty brutal and raw to say the least. It has its thrills and action is worth watching in the theater even though some might feel sick of it, not because of the quantity of it but because of the rawness but the fact is, that’s what real action is!
Gangs of Wasseypur, even though is dark (of course, we are in the land of mafias) it has many scenes with amazing humor woven into it and it isn’t hard to believed or forced humor either. One can get the feel that’s how the people would react in those situations. We wouldn’t say that humor is clean though, it has enough amount of swears in it but then that’s what people use even when they are trying to be funny! As we recall all the scenes, especially the ones in which Manoj Bajpayee is handling/wooing his two wives, when Ramadhir Singh rebukes his son and a couple of others still make us giggle. Those moments made us convert the movie title into Gags of Wasseypur rather than Gangs of Wasseypur.
Gangs of Wasseypur has been written well and as stated, Anurag Kashyap has directed it equally well. There are a number of characters to follow, to keep in mind and take care of but what’s a movie that doesn’t requires you to put your brain to it. The background score, the music keeps certain scenes the feel that they require and the music is good on the whole. Just like most of his other movies, the songs have been woven in the background rather than wasting 5 minutes of on screen time with side dancers and what not crap!
Gangs of Wasseypur is all about the setting up, giving the viewer what the story is all about during the first half of the movie and yet it is good enough to keep you hooked. The second half is equally good as well.
All in all, Gangs of Wasseypur has got a brilliant story, brilliant direction, brilliant background score, thrill, action, politics and a good amount of humor to go along. In short, Gangs of Wasseypur everything that a hit movie needs! It has everything that leaves you wanting for a little more and the best part, you will get more of it! Gangs of Wasseypur is a ‘to be continued’ movie with a second part and end of the first one is such you will definitely want to watch the second!
In the end all that is left to say is that it is movies from directors like Anurag Kashyap that makes us want to watch Bollywood movies for they have everything that a good movie should, everything that makes us choose his movies over a Hollywood flick! As for Gangs of Wasseypur, we give it a good 4 on 5 from us at Observer’s Paradise. We hope that it does turn out to be a blockbuster and if you are above 18 (just for the language) and you haven’t seen this movie yet, go watch it!
