The Curious Case of Rohit Sharma!

Yuvraj singh ,when once asked who he thought to be the most the most talented Indian player around, did not take much time to give the answer. He simply said that Rohit Sharma easily topped the list.

I think, all of us would agree that Sharma has not yet justified his talent. At such a young age, he has already seen the highs and lows of life. Its hard to figure why a player of his flair and potential was not even featuring in the squad, let alone make it to the playing 11.A brilliant fielder that he is, he can contribute to the team’s success in more than one way. Its just that one gets the feeling by looking at him that he is just not interested! There is absolutely nothing wrong with his cricket, but his body language and the way he walks on the field suggests that he is all too bored with it. I know that some of the Rohit sharma fans who are reading this would probably wanna kill me right now but am really sorry guys,I just couldn’t help but notice it.

He has played some match winning innings in the past. The one I enjoyed the most was perhaps in the last over of the match between Deccan Chargers and Kolkatta Knight Riders where he plundered 26 runs of the last over and steered his team to victory. He along with Sachin Tendulkar helped India win the Common Wealth Bank series back in 2008.He  then followed it up with a string of disappointing performances. Then again he got a chance to prove himself in India’s dismal tour to Zimbabwe.Sharma announced his comeback by scoring back to back hundreds against the Lankans. What followed was again a series of not-so-impressive performances. It was basically because of this reason that he was left out in the cold and ignored for the world cup.

However, having said all this, things do seem to have brighten up for him.He did look a lot fitter and a lot more interested while he was playing for the Mumbai Indians.I am not sure, but my guess is that playing alongside Sachin tendulkar again would have helped him sort out issues.Often when a good player is left out of the side,it acts as a catalyst for him to work harder and improve upon his weaknesses. He has got a chance to redeem himself in India’s tour to West Indies and so far he has done a great job with 2 man-of –the –match award winning performances.I sure do hope that he comes into his own very quickly, because the lights of Tendulkar,Dravid,Laxman are not going to linger around for eternity, and once they do decide to hang their boots,it would be up to players like Rohit Sharma to take Indian cricket forward.
