Thousands of titles come to mind when we talk about Multiplayer games. Over the past few decades the gaming industry has seen such a boost that there are endless titles in the market currently. Many of them offer multiplayer, many don’t, however, multilpayer games are the reason why gaming is now considered a solid profession. E-Sports has become almost as popular as regular sports (in many countries) over the past few years and that is obviously due to these amazing competitive multiplayer titles. At Observer’s Paradise, we have come up with a list of what we think are the 10 best multiplayer games that have released to date. A daunting task considering that there is no end to the list of such games but, we dared to take the risk. This list is obviously based on our personal opinions (and of course we haven’t played all the games out there so we might have missed a few solid titles) but, we did consider factors like user-friendliness and overall fanbase/popularity of a game before coming with this list, because these things do matter.
10. Worms: Armaggedon
One does not simply forget the classics! Worms: Armaggedon was probably the first game of its kind I had ever played. It was my favourite game for a long time considering all the hours I had spent on it. This game featured an amazingly fun gameplay and a very cute 2D environment. Developed by Team17, this artillery turn based strategy game was meant to be enjoyed by people of all age groups.
The game allowed the user to take control of a team of up to 8 worms in combat against opposing enemy teams. The primary reason why this game well deserves its spot in the Top 10 is because of the fun factor. The worm animations were adorable and the 2D environment was perfect for the game (They did make a 3D version later but that didn’t appeal in a similar manner). Worms: Armaggedon is one of those games that, at least, I will never forget and will always cherish.
9. Quake 2
Among the best of its kind of all time. This classic first person shooter is nothing less than legendary for most gamers. Developed by id Software, it has been known for its amazing gameplay involving fun gun-battles with multiple enemies in large, outdoor areas. The game has a similar gameplay to Quake, it can be played as a free-for-all deathmatch game, Capture the Flag (CTF), a cooperative version of the single-player game, or as a 1 vs 1 match that was used in many official tournaments (like Cyberathlete Professional League).
The game released in 1997 and is still considered one of the most popular and finest FPSs ever made.
A very recent game that got a lot of appreciation and amazed the entire gaming industry. Minecraft is a sandbox-building independent video game originally created by Swedish creator Markus “Notch” Persson and now developed by his company, Mojang. Minecraft is focused on creativity and building, allowing players to build constructions out of textured cubes in a 3D world.
This game is epic because it has absolutely no objective and hence the scope is unlimited. People have developed so many amazing things on Minecraft: Like a computer that can actually compute, players have actually developed entire games based on Minecraft. The biggest poject is the Lord of the Rings Online Minecraft version which has a lot of similar quests and areas like the Middle Earth. One can make a character and level it up as is the case with any MMORPG. But this is certainly different as developing a full fletched MMORPG on a game is something completely unprecedented. Minecraft deserves this spot for its diversity and concept.

7. Counter Strike 1.6
Probably the most popular MOD till date. The Half Life MOD was thoroughly enjoyed and welcomed by gamers and it soon became an independent franchise. Counter Strike 1.6, however, was the game that got the most attention in this series. This tactical first person shooter developed by Valve saw its fan following increase exponentioally. Considered probably the most amazing team based FPSs, Counter Strike 1.6 is pretty much standard in every gaming tournament.
Counter Strike is certainly not the best FPS out there but then again it is not meant to be that. The game’s sole purpose is to offer a competitive multiplayer environment and it successfully delivers that.
6. Unreal Tournament GOTY
Yet another FPS on the list. Unreal Tournament is the original King of the Hill in the frag-or-be-fragged multiplayer gaming world. This game was the undisputed 1999 Game of the Year and it gave more than enough reasons to deserve that title. It offered certain never-before-seen graphics, an action packed, thrilling and brutal gameplay and a massive and varied feature list that gave gamers more than they ever expected.
This game was THE game to play at that time and undoubtedly offered the most fun one could have in a game. This classic FPS was played all over the world in many tournaments and locally over the LAN. Even the AI mode of this game was considered to be difficult since the developers had almost perfected the deathmatching skills and overall game awareness of the bots to an extent that they actually posed a very real threat your existence in the game.
The superb gameplay (both online and offline) and the fact that this game can still be considered one of the finest FPSs (gameplay wise) of all times (even though it released more than a decade back) is what makes this game deserve a spot in this Top 10 list.
The remaining Top 5 Multiplayer games will be revealed very soon…so do keep a watch on this space. 😉
