Diablo III: Game in the Spotlight

With Diablo III set for a release after 2 days, fans are certainly very excited. This will be Blizzard’s next big title that was announced quite a long time back (in 2008) and has been in the gaming news since then. Diablo is a very popular series that began its journey in 1996. Set in the fictional Kingdom of Khanduras, located in the world of Sanctuary, Diablo had the player take control of a lone hero battling to rid the world of Diablo, the Lord of Terror. The game received a lot of critical acclaim and was wholeheartedly accepted by the people. This game laid the beginning of an amazing series, which would in the coming years become among the most popular series of the gaming industry. The sequel came out in the year 2000. Building on the success of its predecessor Diablo, Diablo II was one of the most popular games of 2000. Major factors that contributed to Diablo II’s success included its continuation of popular fantasy themes from the previous game and its access to Blizzard’s free online play service Battle.net.

And now, after a long wait of twelve years, the third sequel to the hack and slash horror fantasy is finally coming to the stores. The open beta of the game had gone live a long time back and was tested by many people. I haven’t had the chance to try it myself but, a few friends of mine have a had an amazing experience trying out the different classes and varied gameplay techniques. They say that the game certainly requires a bit of time to get used to but, the experience is worth the learning curve. The amazing artwork/design of the game is being appreciated by all and, that is one thing that even I appreciate after seeing so many gameplay videos on youtube.

Even though I haven’t played the previous Diablo titles (I did try Diablo II at my friend’s place once but, I wasn’t capable enough to appreciate its awesomeness back then), for some reason, I have been excited about this one. I have absolutely no knowledge about the details of the world of Sanctuary but, the videos that I have been watching recently compelled me to fall in love with the fast paced and intriguing gameplay. The gorgeous environments just added to my desire.

Now, with only 2 days left for the release of the game I thought of checking it’s price over the net in India. What I saw really struck me back and I was truly shocked after seeing the price tag — Rs. 3799! Now that’s just too much for any game. The desire I had to play this game was lost. It made me rage over Blizzard because this price tag is just too insane. Even if its the best game of the century, it can’t be worth that much money (It’s not even the collector’s edition or anything).  Such insane prices just make me believe that Blizzard wants the community to find “alternative ways” to play their games. When the best of the best titles are available at a cost of under Rs. 2000, I fail to understand why would any game be worth so much.

I was truly looking forward to playing this game…but I guess it won’t really happen (any time soon at least). Anyways, what do you guys have to say about this, and the game in general? Don’t you think it’s just too overpriced? Do leave your comments below.
