Popular franchises might lift the Gaming Industry out of its sales slump

Video games were not doing that well in April as there was a slump of 32 percent in year over year sales which had a lot of analysts very worried. Overall April retail sales were $630.4 million, down 32% from $930.9 million in April 2011. The month of may was predicted to be a good one for the industry, and it is certainly turning out that way with Blizzard’s Diablo III setting all time records for maximum pre-orders of any Blizzard product (which also produces World of Warcraft) ever with a whooping 824,000 pre-order players. Another hit franchise, from Rockstar Games however, Max Payne had its third chapter released on 14th May, which did pretty good in pre-orders as well with more than 500,000 pre-orders.

Both these games have a well established fan base and analysts say these games will sell really well and would do a lot of benefit to the industry for the month of may and in the future as well. The industry experts opine that Diablo III, which has released after more than a decade since its prequel, will sell more than 4 Million units within a year. There hasn’t been a quantified predicition on the sales of Max Payne 3, however, experts reckon it can be the top console game seller for the first half of 2012.

Even thought the month of May is never considered “hot” in terms of game sales, this time, however, the case is different. Experts think that both games could be big hits and won’t cannibalize the sales of one another since both titles speak to different audiences and have a varied fan base. Moreover, they believe, Max Payne 3’s main purpose is to cater to the console audience, whereas, Diablo III, being a sole PC product, will make huge profits among the PC aficionados. So both these products could be big blockbusters and have the potential to boost the sales for the gaming industry in the near future.

Both games released a few days back and will be soon available  in Indian stores (offline) as well. As of now, both products can be ordered online – Diablo III for Rs.3799 and Max Payne 3 for Rs.999 for the PC version and Rs. 2499 for the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions (Prices from flipkart.com and nextworld.in).
